Victoria ‘Longwood Hybrid’ Nutt 1961

Victoria ‘Longwood Hybrid’ Nutt 1961 is a hybrid developed by Patrick Nutt of Longwood Gardens fame by crossing the two species plants (Victoria cruziana x Victoria amazonica) It is an intermediate between the species parents, tending toward Victoria cruziana characteristics. Pads are green/bronze with intermediate rims, dark red on the exterior. Buds are somewhat rounded with some thorns on the medium pink sepals. Flowers are creamy white the first night with slightly rounded petals and medium pink the second night. It is a much hardier plant than either of it’s parents. It can withstand higher winds, lower air and water temperatures and it begins flowering 3 to 11 days earlier than it’s parents.

It was crossed on September 17, 1960 at 9:30 p.m. He used a first day bloom of Victoria cruziana as the seed parent and a second day bloom of Victoria amazonica as the pollen parent. The first seed was collected on October 25, 1960 and stored moist for 12 weeks. It first flowered in 1961.
