Nymphaea 'Robert Sterling Price'

Nymphaea ‘Robert Sterling Price’

Nymphaea ‘Robert Sterling Price’ is a 2013 Landon hybrid created to honor a Great Friend.

Mr. Robert Price was a teacher at the local high school. For years, he taught his students as well as aided Ken at the same time. As part of his education for his students, he had them assist with the re-potting of waterlilies, cleaning of the park and general environment management. The kids helped Ken make a better place in their own civic community. In return, they learned about the biology of waterlilies and associated plants in return from their teacher and Ken. They were able to take book knowledge they got from school and view it in practice in a practical application that showcases the beauty in nature. Some of these students ended up working part time with Ken because they learned that they enjoyed it or had a natural proclivity to do the work. A number waterlilies have been named for the students who have gone through this process.

ROBERT STERLING PRICE

June 5, 1944 – August 13, 2013

This was Robert’s last visit to the Collection.

He loved working there with Ken and Ken loved having him as the greatest friend he could have asked for.

He is truly missed because he touched everyone in a powerful and positive way.

Robert and his Students at the IWC

The following are pictures taken on April 15, 2008. There were approximately 50 students there with the Robert and Ken. In about an hour and a half, they re-potted about 20 of the giant containers that weigh in excess of 200 lbs. They swept the park of debris from the live oak tree that constantly litters the park and the pools. They cut weeds out of the sidewalks by hand. They had fun while doing this. I was fortunate to be there to take a handful of pictures. I wanted to post them to show the great work these young people and their teacher accomplished.

ROBERT STERLING PRICE

June 5, 1944 – August 13, 2013

After a year-long battle with leukemia, Robert Sterling Price, “Uncle Bob”, 69 of San Angelo was called home on Tuesday August 13, 2013 at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, while surrounded by his family. He is truly missed by all that he touched.

Robert was born on June 5, 1944 in San Angelo to Frank and Lula Belle (Fairchild) Price. After living in London, Texas for five years, they moved back to San Angelo and he attended Day Elementary, Lincoln Junior High, and Lakeview High School, where he graduated as Most Likely to Succeed. He attended Angelo State University earning a Bachelor’s of Science, Texas A&M earning a Master’s of Education, and earning a 3rd degree in Education Administration from Angelo State. He married the love of his life, Cherylene Pate on December 21, 1966 in San Angelo, and never spent more than a night away from her for the next 46 years. He had an amazing love for teaching and instilled that in the thousands of students that he taught in his 43 years at Central. He had a passion for pep rallies and his students and fellow teachers loved to see his signs and the angry orange Bobcat flag at football games. He touched many lives with his generosity, kindness, and knowledge. He made his students laugh during “It” week and the “Billion Pennies” lecture, work during the lab practical and the bug collection, cry during Psychology week, and think about their impact on the world when he destroyed his room for Earth week. In his final goodbye letter to his students, he said, “The greatest and most important lesson of all I tried to teach you is, to remember this one great truth of your life: I believe that somehow, somewhere, someday, you really will make a difference in this world. Goodbye, and have a wonderful life.” Pallbearers will be Tommy Walters, Kye Miller, Gary Smith, Mike Caraway, Bill Holubec, and Kater King. He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Frankie Williams and one brother; William Price. Survivors include his wife of 46 years; Cherylene Price of San Angelo, two daughters; Shellane King and Todd Nolan of Midland, and Robin Langfeld and husband, Troy of D’Hanis, a son; Robert Sterling Price Jr. and wife, Jenni of San Angelo, a sister; Dicksey Montoya of Crane, six Grandchildren; Kater and Kanada King of Midland, Bryn and Briley Langfeld of D’Hanis, and Julianna and William Price of San Angelo, numerous other relatives, hundreds of coworkers, and thousands of students that he taught at Central High School.
