Robert Price

Mr. Robert Price is a teacher at the local high school. For years, he has taught his students as well as aided Ken at the same time. As part of his education for his students, he has them assist with the repotting of lilies, cleaning of the park and general environment management. The kids help Ken make a better place in their own civic community. In return, they learn about biology of waterlilies and associated plants in return from their teacher and Ken. They are able to take book knowledge they get from school and see it in practice in a practical application that showcases the beauty in nature as well as the beauty that can occur when you use knowledge to assist in the natural biological process. Some of these students end up working part time with Ken because they learn that they enjoy it or have a natural proclevity to the work. A number of his waterlilies have been named for the students who have come through this process, become someone he mentors and then move on to a productive life with a new skill set.

Unfortunately this may be the last time that such an event will occur. Mr. Price is going to have to teach a different level of student's next year and his collaberation with Ken may come to an end. I hope this is not the case because his student's help is indespensable to the park. And just as importantly, future biologists may not even know they would have been good at that job without this exposure.

The following are pictures taken on April 15, 2008. There were approximately 50 students there with the Robert and Ken. In about an hour and a half, they repotted about 20 of the giant containers that weigh in excess of 200 lbs. They swept the park of debris from the live oak tree that constantly litters the park and the pools. They cut weeds out of the sidewalks by hand. They had fun while doing this. I was fortunate to be there to take a handful of pictures. I wanted to post them to show the great work these young people and their teacher can accomplish.
