Special People

Patrick Nutt

He is most famous for his for his outstanding hybrid, V. Longwood. He is however, a father, a grandfather, a long distance runner and an explorer. It would be very difficult to distill in a few sentences his contributions but we will try to highlight a few. He is a protege of the late George Harry Pring and as such is the most authoritative and knowledgeable person alive. We consider it an honor to be able to draw upon his expertise.

Tribute To An Icon

I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing and working with Patrick Nutt for

some thirty plus years. His invaluable work at Longwood Gardens and elsewhere

concerning the Botanical Sciences is of the Highest Merit. His dedicated efforts

with regard to the genus Nymphaea and Victoria are legendary. He is the

originator of Victoria Longwood which has come to be one of the finest plants to

have ever graced the planet. I salute him with Tribute, Honor and Respect. He is

indeed an Icon.

Ken Landon

Patrick has been involved in several expeditions over the last few years that will continue to change the botanical world of Victoria. Below is a picture that was recently sent to us of a plant in the wild that has stronger characteristics than what is being used for propagation at the present. As you can see, it is a beautiful specimen. Ken has grown this plant and confirmed that it is a stronger plant than what he had previously grown.

Ken said the following,"This plant was supplied to me for culture in 2007. The plant was unusually strong, producing 7 foot leaves on the average and much larger if allowed. The flowers were averaging 16 inches across. It is the finest Victoria that I have ever grown."

Patrick Nutt was a major influence in the development of Longwood's outdoor water gardens. Patrick went to Longwood in 1957 from Malabar Farm in Ohio. He had trained prior to that at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England. Although he has retired he remains active as a knowledgeable resource for Longwood. He has spent a half century helping to make Longwood one of the most respected names in the Botanical world. Even though he is retired, he still is pushing the envelope in the world of botany. He along with the Brynes, Don and Shirley, of Florida are in the process of documenting a brand new Victoria for the world. He went on an expedition at the beginning of last year to find the newest Victoria with the Brynes and others. They found the Victoria they were searching for. We will be fortunate in the near future to have some of the first pictures to be posted on the web. The new Victoria data is at the following link.

He is active as a teacher and guest speaker. His knowledge of Victoria is unsurpassed in the world and as such is in great demand.

These pictures are scans from The Trend Leader, a local newspaper in Pennsylvania. The photographer and columnist is Shannon Hallamyer. Pat sent these clippings to Ken for us to post.
