Nymphaea 'Royal Purple'
Nymphaea ‘Royal Purple’
Nymphaea ‘Royal Purple’ is a tropical lily with a purple cup then star with green viviparous pads. This is one that is in the trade today. Many of the characteristics are similar but it is not the same as the original lily that is described below. It is not as rich and deep in color. The one in the trade is most likely a seedling of the original that was grown out and then multiplied by means of viviparous reproduction. As this is the only plant that most people have seen as Nymphaea ‘Royal Purple’ that is what it’s name has become synonymous with but it is incorrect.
The original was introduced by Buskirk in 1927. It’s publication date is 1939. It’s parentage is unknown.
